Hi, I just wanted to say thank-you for your work on this, I think it was a much needed addition, and now my sister can finally use the full gamut of search plugins.

Based on my personal use...

I'd hate having 2 boxes, one for addresses and one for searches, so i hate Firefox xDDDDDD. I love to search simply writing on main box and hitting UP arrow and then ENTER.

But in the same time, you should be able to change the search engine even if search box is hidden.

I don't use sidebar, so... my suggestion is:
- An address bar where you can search writing some words+UP+ENTER
- An optional foldable drop-down menu "button" to change search engine
- An optional search box, *independent* from that foldable button
- Address bar should search with your desired engine, and let you know it through its message when you hit the UP arrow: "Search with *****:"

Alternative and simple method: Adding a drop-down menu in SeaMonkey's throbber to choose search engine.

PS: The only thing i like from Firefox is their tab's throbber: Those 6 dots spinning. I use SeaMonkey's Modern theme and that 2 arrows are too simple for this great theme.

Or you could just allow multiple search engines to be listed in the URL dropdown as it is (e.g. up up enter, etc.).

All of those except the "foldable drop-down menu 'button'" either do exist in OpenSearch-powered SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 1 (i.e. the address bar parts) or are planned (independent optional search "bar" box) to be available.

Not sure what problem you might be seeing, I somehow suspect you haven't been testing our builds with this yet.

...is... in Firefox, if you remove search box, then you are removing that drop-down "button" where you choose the selected search engine, since they're the same component (drop-down + search box).

I don't like to have that behaviour on SM, it's weird. I'd only like to see 1 box (address bar) and 1 drop-down list to switch between engines.

It's only a piece of taste. sinc ei like to search through address bar, i hate the need of 1 extra box if i only want to switch between engines (yes, i also hate entering on Preferences just to switch).

I have a nigthly on my workplace, but i haven't noticed anything (it was a migrated v2.0.x and it hadn't any search box, so it didn't show it when upgraded).

Please Kairo, pick the new FF GUI to Seamonkey Beta 2.

Which "new FF GUI" in terms of search? Everything else would be off-topic here, so I guess you have found some change in search that I don't know of.


Jota.Ce: I have no idea how we could solve that problem. The location bar itself doesn't have a list of available search engines to search from, and there's currently no plan or good idea to change that.

Very glad to here this, since the search bar is one of this "we make it more complicate by trying to make them easier" things.

I'd say...

Just splitting the component in 2 components:
- One for searching (a text box)
- One for engine switching (a "drop-down menu" button)

And people can decide which component will show and which one will be hidden.

But i don't know if SM people are bound to Ff decissions in these kind of things.
