Metrics, Analytics, and Tools

Which metrics are good? How do they change our behavior? Are we optimizing for the right thing (i.e. what our users actually *want*)? What tools can we use for the right metrics? What tools to dynamically look at different metrics and throw up dashboards fast so we don't freeze in serving a single "god" metric?
